Myocardium
A powerful muscle which pumps blood throughout the circulatory system.
Atrium
The upper chamber, which receives blood.
Ventricle
The lower chamber, which pumps blood out of the heart.
Pulmonary Circulation
A pathway of blood pumping from the heart to the lungs.
Systemic Circulation
A pathway of blood pumping from the heart to the rest of the body.
Valve
Flaps of connective tissue between the atria and the ventricles to prevent backflow of the blood.
Pacemaker
Muscle cells in the sinoatrial node which control the impulses which beat the heart.
Aorta
The aorta is the first of a series of blood vessels that carry the blood on its round trip throughout the body and back to the heart.

A condition in which fatty deposits called plaque build up on the inner walls of the arteries.

A straw colored fluid made up of water, gasses, salts, enzymes, nutrients, hormones, wastes, and proteins.
Hemoglobin
Iron containing protein that binds to oxygen in the lungs and transports it to tissues throughout the body where the oxygen is released.
Lymphocyte
A special class of white blood cells that produce antibodies that are proteins that help destroy pathogens.
Platelet
Each fragment of cytoplasm is enclosed in a piece of cell membrane and released into the bloodstream as a platelet.
Lymph
A fluid which collects fluid that is lost by the blood and returns it to the circulatory system.
