Recombinant DNA
DNA that has been formed artificially by combining constituents from different organisms.
Restriction Enzymes
An enzyme produced chiefly by certain bacteria, having the property of cleaving DNA molecules at or near a specific sequence of bases.
Gel Electrophoresis
A technique for separating protein molecules of varying sizes in a mixture by moving them through a block of gel, as of agarose or polyacrylamide, by means of an electric field, with smaller molecules moving faster and therefore farther than larger ones.
DNA Fingerprint
The use of a DNA probe for the identification of an individual, as for the matching of genes from a forensic sample with those of a criminal suspect.
Biotechnology
The use of living organisms or other biological systems in the manufacture of drugs or other products or for environmental management, as in waste recycling.
Nucleic Acid Hybridization
A technique in which single-stranded nucleic acids (DNA or RNA) are allowed to interact so that complexes called hybrids are formed by molecules with similar, complementary sequences.
Polymerase Chain Reaction
A method to analyze a short sequence of DNA (or RNA) even in samples containing only minute quantities of DNA or RNA.
Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLP's)
A difference in DNA between people that can be recognized by the use of a restriction enzyme.
Restriction Fragment
A fragment of a DNA molecule cleaved by a restriction enzyme.
Restriction Site
The specific sites at which a restriction enzyme will cleave DNA.
Southern Blotting
A method routinely used in molecular biology for detection of a specific DNA sequence in DNA samples.
Cloning Vector
A small piece of DNA into which a foreign DNA fragment can be inserted.
Sticky Ends
An end of a DNA double helix at which a few unpaired nucleotides of one strand extend beyond the other.
Vaccine
A substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases.
Denaturation
A process in which proteins or nucleic acids lose their tertiary structure and secondary structure.
DNA Ligase
A specific type of enzyme, a ligase that repairs single-stranded discontinuities in double stranded DNA molecules.
Gene Cloning
The man-operated process of extracting dna from a host cell and implanting it to function in another type of cell.
