What is Exercise Physiology?
Study of cellular reactions within the body during and after exercise.
What does GAS stand for? What is is? What are the 3 stages of GAS?
General Adaptation Syndrome

Process of adaptation due to stress.

Alarm, Resistance and Exhaustion
What does overload mean?
Exercise causes body to increase effort more than it is normally accustomed to.
What is the Kinetic Chain?
Composed of the nervous, muscular and skeletal system; must function together for entire body.
What are the 2 major divisions of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System. The CNS is composed of the brain and spinal cord. PNS is the region outside the CNS.
What are the 2 divisions of the PNS? Are there any sub-divisions?
Motor and Sensory

Yes, under Motor. They are somatic and autonomic.
What is the autonomic system? Does it have any subsystems?
It is a subsystem of Motor division. It controls the body's involuntary internal processes.

Yes, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.
What is the difference between smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle?
Smooth: involuntary muscle actions (digestive tract, uterus etc). - Autonomic
Skeletal: Muscles are capable of voluntary contractions. - Somatic

Cardiac: Heart only
What are the 3 layers of Fascia? What is their significance?
Fascia is a sheet or band of fibrous connective tissue which separates and contains muscles within their compartments.

Epimysium - outermost layer and completely surrounds muscle.
Perimysium
Domysium - surrounds individual muscle fibers
What is the structure of the motor unit?
The motor unit is constructed of myofibers (muscle fibers), which are bundles of long, parallel fibers. Within the myofibers, there are myofibrils. Within the mysofibrils, there are sarcomeres, smallest contractile unit of skeletal muscle.
