Thomas Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes wrote the Leviathan and believed that men originally live in anarchy. However a natural law led to the emergence of powerful, absolute rulers to keep society from returning to anarchy. (Believed in Absolutism)

Believed in natural laws. He believed a SOCIAL CONTRACT existed between the rulers and the people. If the basic right of life, liberty, and property were violated the contract was broken and the people could overthrow the ruler.

Accepted that a women's first duty was a good mother. At the same time, however, she thought women should be able to decide what is in their own interest. Called for equal education.

Argued that the free market should be allowed to regulate business. He tried to show how things were linked to the market forces of supply and demand. Strong supporter of the laissez faire.
