Attenuated whole vaccine |
Living but weakened pathogen -closely mimics infection -can replicate -never recommended for immunocompromised patients -transferrable directly |
Inactivated whole agent vaccines |
Pathogen is killed completely but structure of the pathogen is still intact -exposing your body to as much information about the pathogen without getting infected. |
Subunit vaccines |
Part of the pathogen (fragments) or something the pathogen makes (toxoids) -toxin is damaged first so it's not harmful |
Recombinant vaccines |
- does not need to be grown in cell or animal •typically yeast cells- like our cells |
Conjugated vaccines |
Combination of antigen and protein Example: piece of polysaccharide and toxoid -polysaccharide may not pull a strong response so you add toxoid so WBC can find and destroy it |
DNA or nucleic vaccines |
Very new- takes our cells and injection of DNA of pathogen in order to make an antigen |
Herd Immunity |
When most of a population is immune to a disease |
Hemagglutination |
Agglutination with blood cells |
Direct agglutination |
Antibodies bind to pathogen directly |
Agglutination test |
Antibodies binding to antigen on a larger molecule -bacteria cell, whole viruses, blood |
Indirect agglutination |
Antibodies are bound to latex beads (artificial) instead of bacteria or viruses |
