More on Modeling

Locus of Control

Bandura, 4TH most eminent psychologist in the last century

Julian Wroughter--64th

Four step process of modelling *** on exam

interrelated in such a way that observing a behavior we learn to recreate it.

-have to pay attention

-we have to retain retention process

-production process (produce behavior)

-Incentive or motivational process

Attentional processes

develop our cognitive processas and perceptual skills so that we can pay sufficient attention to a model

perceive the model accurately enough to imitate the percieved behavior

-- example: staying awake during drivers ed class

Retention processes

retaining or remembering model's behavior so we can imitate or repeat it at a later time

use our cognitive processes to encode or form mental images and verbal descriptions of model's behavior.

example-- taking notes on lecture or video of person driving a car

production processes

translate mental images or verbal symbolic representations of the model's behavior into our own overt behavior

do this by physically producing the response and receiving feedback on our accuracy

ex: in car with instructor practice shifting gears and dodging traffic cones.

incentive / motivational processes

perceiving the models behavior leads to a reward and expecting our learning and successful perfomance of the same behavior will lead to similar consequences.
ex: expecting when we master driving skills we'll pas the exam and get a drivers' license

Locus of Control

people acquire generalized expectancies to perceive reinforcing events as either dependent on their own behavior or as beyond their control

expectancy becomes generalized-- come to expect the things you want in life is dependant on either self and own resources or randomized.

Internal locus of control

belief that things i want in my life i can get with knowlege, skills, ability, ect.

external locus of control

belief that things wanted in life are controlled by influences outside of one's self. these people see little or no connection between their behavior and various reinforcers....

example horoscope

belief the occurrence of reinforcers is related to fate, luck, or powerful others

I-E Scale

items that you say either yes or no to.

-i have often found what is going to happen will happen.

-trusting to fate has never turned out as well for me as making a decision to take a definite course of action.

Correlates of LoC

Internal tends to be high achievers, do better academically.

Internal resist social pressure; less hostile; more favorable toward authority

Internal seek more info about health maintenance; engage in more precautionary heath practices; less likely to have cartiac problems

Internal less to be diagnosed with psychiatric illness; less anxious.

They do not do well in situations where there is little opportnity to excersize control

Last word on LoC

execptions to control can be good

the relevance to psychological adjustment is the fit between individual's need and desire for control and the actual enviroment.
