Is the greenhouse effect good or bad? |
Good It is essential for life on our planet.
What is the most important GHG? |
Water Vapor H2O Absorbs infrared radiation > Long wavelength radiation. |
What do GHGs do? |
Absorb long wavelength radiation coming off of Earth and radiate it back in all directions. |
What are the GHGs? |
CO2 Carbon Dioxide: The "Kardashian" of GHGs. The standard that all other GHGs are compared to. It only has a heat trapping ability of 1 though. H2o: The most important
N2O Nitrous Oxide
CH4 Methane |
What is the temperature of the sun?
What is the average temperature of Earth? |
Sun: 10,000°F Earth: 59°F
Does the sun emit short or long wavelength radiation? |
Short |
What is the job of GHGs? |
Absorb and emit thermal infrared radiation or heat. They emit in all directions, so some goes back to Earth, and some back to space. |
If the concentration of GHGs goes up what happens? |
The temperature in troposphere goes up which leads to global warming. |
What are some natural causes of climate change? |
-Volcanic ash, dust -Air Sea interaction -Ocean Circulation > Thermohaline Circ. -Solar Output
What can global warming do in regards to ocean circulation and Europe? |
It can shut down the gulf stream and cause global cooling in Europe. |
What are influences on climate? |
>Milankovitch Cycles >Changes in Solar Input >Thermohaline Circulation >Volcanic Eruptions >Sulfate Aerosols >ENSO = El Nino Southern Oscillation |
What are the 3 Milankovich cycles? |
1. Change in shape of Earth's Orbit > Goes from eliptical to spherical and back every 100,000 years 2. Axial "Wobble" > Shift in the orientation of axial tilt. Every 19,000 to 23,000 years. 3. Tilt of the Axis will change. 41,000 years. |
What does El Nino do? |
It produces "teleconnections. A shift in one place can influence the rest of the world. |
What happens to the trade winds in El Nino? |
They Diminish |
What is upwelling and when does it occur? |
Upwelling brings up cold nutrient filled water and occurs during normal conditions. |
What happens to the water when the tradewinds diminish? |
The warmer water comes back, cold water sloshes back, and everything switches. Japan and Indonesia go from low pressure to high pressure. |
What is the definition of El Nino? |
An increase in SSTs of 1°C in the eastern equatorial pacific. |
