The basic unit of the nervous system.

Neuron

A single process that extends away from the cell body and conducts impulses away from the cell body.

Axon

AKA Nerve fibers

Rootlike structures that receive impulses and conduct them toward the cell body.

Dendrite

AKA Nerve fibers

Neuron cell bodies grouped together outside the CNS.

Ganglia

The junction between two neurons or between a neuron and a receptor.

Synapse

The chemical substance created by neural impulses in the junction of the synapse.

Neurotransmitter

A protective covering over some nerve cells, including parts of the spinal cord, white matter of the brain, and most peripheral nerves.

Myelin

The supply or stimulation of a body part through the action of nerves.

Innervation

Sensory organ that receive external stimulation and transmit that information to the sensory neurons.

Receptor

Related to spatial orientation or perception of movement.

Proprioception

The layers of connective tissue enclosing the CNS.

Meninges

The second layer of the meninges.

Arachnoid

Means located above or superficial to the dura mater.

Epidural

The clear, colorless ultrafiltrate that nourishes, cools, and cushions the CNS.

Cerebrospinal Fluid

The largest part of the brain, responsible for receiving and processing information.

Cerebrum

The second largest part of the brain, coordinates muscle activity for smooth movement.

Cerebellum

The process of maintaining a stable internal body environment.

Homeostasis

Without coordination; "stumbling"

Ataxia

Shaking of the brain caused by injury

Concussion

Inflammation of the brain.

Encephalitis

Recurrent seizures of non-systemic origin or of intracranial disease.

Epilepsy

Means unknown cause or disease of an individual.

Idiopathic

Inflammation of the meninges.

Meningitis

Means weakness.

Paresis

Loss of voluntary movement or or immobility.

Paralysis

Sudden, involuntary contraction of some muscles cause by a brain disturbance.

Seizure

AKA convulsions

Without pain.

Analgesia

Absence of sensation.

Anesthesia

The part of the peripheral nervous system that innervates smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands.

Autonomic

UMMMM you just need to know how to spell this cuz you already know the definition. :)

Paralyzed
