What is self disclosure?

  • revealing intimate information about yourself to another person
  • what you usually tell the supermarket clerk when she asks how are you today?

what does rogers say about self disclosre?

  • facts are friendly. encouraged the transparent self. encourages clients to reveal intimate detail about themselves. this is the window to change, this is the window to a healthy self.

disclosure reciprocity

  • the tendency to reveal information about ourselves to the same degree.
  • we tend to disclose info to people we like and we like those who disclose to us
  • builds trust and makes us responsive and these are important factors in reciprocity

What does self disclosure look like in relationships

  • integral part of friendship and romantic relationships
  • rule of reciprocity does not necessarily apply to close friends (trust is established)
