Ice Age

A period of time when large ice sheets, known as glaciers covered over half the Earth, lowering sea levels all over the planet.

Iroquois

A Native American tribe that lived in the woodlands of Eastern North America and had a complex society, which included formal law codes. [Formed a Federation with other tribes.]

Carbon Dating

A scientific method used for dating objects by measuring the amount of radioactive carbon in them.

Olmec

An ancient Native tribe that lived along the Gulf Coast in what is now Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. They thrived from 1500 B.C. to 300 B.C. until their society collapsed for unknown reasons.

Maya

An ancient Pyramid building tribe who lived in what is now Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. They had a large society with complex religious and governmental institutions.

Quipus

An Inca record keeping device that used colored strings of different length.

Aztec

They were an ancient tribe of hunters who founded their civilization on Lake Texcoco, modern day Mexico City. They were a militaristic tribe whose culture was centered around a violent religion, which included human sacrifice.

Tenochtitlan

This was the great island city, created by the Aztecs, on Lake Texcoco. Built by filling in the lake with soil, it became one of the largest cities in the world, and a center of trade.

Inca

A powerful ancient tribe who created an empire through military conquest. They ruled that area of modern day Colombia, Chile, and Northern Argentina, from their capital at Cuzco.

Hieroglyphics

The name given to the Mayan form of writing that used pictures to represent ideas and sounds.

Artifacts

These are the items left over from ancient civilizations that help archaeologists learn about their culture and lives. (include tools, weapons, pottery, toys, and other items.)

Nomads

These are people who move from place to place, without a permanent home. They follow herds of animals for food.

Migration

The movement of large numbers of people from one homeland to another.

Culture

The common customs and beliefs of a group of people. The way of life of a group of people.

Pueblo

The large stone buildings created by the Anasazi tribe, that made up villages. They were given this name by the Spanish explorers.

Civilization

A highly developed society.

Theocracy

A society ruled by a religious leader.

Federation

A group of linked governments that come together for a common purpose.

Clan

A group of related people.
