What does the rhyme sublime study say? |
When parents frequently read rhymes to their children, their children become more aware of word sounds (phonological awareness) which makes learning to read much easier |
|
What is one of the two main reading skills? |
Word Recognition/Decoding (identifying that word that particular letter pattern makes) a) Phonetic Decomposition: sound out the word (slow, used for unfamiliar words) b) Whole word recognition: retrieve from memory (fast, for familiar words) |
|
What is the second of the two main reading skills? 5 reasons why it improves |
Comprehension (understanding what you're reading) -children derive meaning by combining words to form propositions and then combining prepositions 1) Word recognition gets better-dont have to put all attention into sounding out the words 2) More room in your brain for working memory- you can remember more things and manipulate them 3) The more you know the easier it is to comprehend (knowledge base) 4) Monitoring increases- keeping track of what you understand and don't understand 5) Use of strategies- different strategies appropriate for different circumstances |
