External respiration
entrance of air into lungs and gas exchange between alveoli and blood
Internal respiration

-external intercostal muscles flatten causing rib cage and chest wall to be pushed up and out
-volume of thoracic cavity increases, decreasing pressure,causing lungs to fill with air
Exhalation
-passive process
-lungs and chest highly elastic trying to recoil
-diaphragm & external intercostal muscles relax
-chest wall pushes inward
-decrease in thoracic cavity volume causing air pressure increase
-lungs deflate, forcing air out of the alveoli
Control of Ventilation
regulated by neurons located in medulla oblongata whose rhythmic discharges stimulate intercoastal muscles and diaphragm to contract
