What is the circulatory system of a squid? |
-Closed Circulatory system -two gill hearts send deoxygenated blood through the gills -systemic heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body |
What is the circulatory system of a Crayfish? |
-Open circulatory system -Dorsal heart -System of arteries (Abdominal aorta and anterior dorsal aorta -blood flow: dorsal arteries → capillaries → sinuses |
What is the digestive system of a Squid? |
-Complete -Mouth → esophagus → stomach → anus |
What is the digestive system of a Crayfish? |
-Food enters through mouth → esophagus. -Two stomachs: Cardiac and Pyloric -Intestine → anus |
What is the function of the Cardiac Stomach?
-Grinds up food. |
What is the function of the Pyloric Stomach? |
-Digests food. |
What is the respiratory system of a Squid? |
-Use gills inside their mantle cavities -Water is constantly circulated over the gills allowing oxygen to be diffused across cell wall into gills. -Siphon brings water in and out of the body. |
What is the respiratory system of a Crayfish? |
-Breathe through gills -movement of legs help water circulate over gills -Can remain out of water for a while. |
What is the nervous system of a Squid? |
-2 fused ganglia create a brain -nerve axons link the brain to the body -Statocysts in brain |
What are nerve axons? |
-Fused nerve fibers |
What are statocysts? |
-allow squids to position themselves in response to gravity. |
What is the nervous system of a Crayfish? |
-Uses antennae, antennules, eyes -2 nerves from “brain” connect to form ventral nerve cord -Nerves and ganglion are clustered in each body section |
What is the excretory system of a Squid? |
-2 kidney-like structures. -Gills filter wastes -ammonia comes out through uric acid. |
What is the excretory system of a Crayfish? |
-Green Glands located at base of antennae -Bladder stores the waste and released through duct under antennae |
What is the sensory system of a Squid? |
-Chromatophores and statocysts -No blind spots, skin detects light -Have eyes that can detect chemicals, vibrations, and touch. |
What are chromatophores? |
-Cell on surface of skin that opens and closes for defense, camouflage, and emotions. -open → dark, closed → light |
What are statocysts? |
-Balance sensors at the base of each antennae -lined with sensory hairs that have grains of sand. -Body tilts → grains shift against the hairs, which sends impulses to the brain. |
What is the sensory system of a Crayfish? |
-Antennae, eyes, antennules, bristles, statocyst -Compound eye used for visual receptor and senses light. |
What is the reproductive system of a Squid? |
-Males change colors to attract mates. -Females have a hidden sac under a set of glands in the gills to protect the eggs. -Males produce long tubes with sperm and have a modified arm to put in female. -Females release transparent eggs into water. |
What is the reproductive system of a Crayfish? |
-Males place a sperm packet on the underside of the female’s belly. -Female curls tail and releases eggs that pass through the sperm down to her tail. |
What is a Ganglia? |
-Groups of interneurons |
What is a nerve net? |
-Neurons connected into a net arrangement -Starfish |
What is a Brain? |
-cerebral ganglia further developed |
What is a Cerebrum? |
-Receives and sensory info and sends out response ex. learning, memory, conscious thought |
What is a Cerebellum? |
-coordinates movement and balance. |
What is the Medulla oblongata? |
-controls internal functions |
What are Oviparous Animals? |
-Offspring develops in an egg outside the body. |
What are Ovoviviparous Animals? |
-Embryo develops inside mother using a yolk sac from the egg. |
What are Viviparous Animals? |
-Offspring that obtain nutrients from the mother during development (placenta) |
What is Complete Metamorphosis? |
-Go through a complete change. -Egg → larva → pupa → adult. |
What is Incomplete Metamorphosis? |
-Baby looks like a mini adult -Egg → nymph → adult |
What is the difference between antennules and antennae? |
Antennules - balance, touch and taste Antennae - smell, touch and taste. Longer |
What are maxillae? |
They hold solid food, tear it, and pass it to the mouth. |
What are maxillipeds? |
Hold food during eating. |
What is the difference between arms and tentacles? |
Arms - shorter and covered in suckers. x8 Tentacles - long with flat end. x2 |
What is a caecum? |
Produces different digestive enzymes |
What is a nidamental gland? |
secretes the shell that surrounds the eggs and hardens it. |
