Greenware
Pottery that has not been bisque fired but has been formed.
Leather Hard
the condition of the raw ware when most of the moisture has left the body but when it is still plastic enough to be carved or joined.
Slurry
a clay in liquid suspension that helps bind.
Slip
a clay in liquid suspension; colored used for decoration in mishima and sgraffito.
Quartz Inversion
occurs at 1060 degrees F when the silica in the clay expands from alpha to beta particles. The clay will crack if you go through this temperature too quickly.
Test for Clay
plasticity, shrinkage, warpage.
Bone Dry
completely air dry, ready to be bisque fired. (very fragile!)
Bisque
unglazed ware fired to a temperature sufficient to harden but not mature the body.
Glaze fire
a firing cycle to the temperature at which the glaze materials will melt to form a glass like surface coating. This is uaullyat the point of maximus body maturity and it is considerably higher than the bisque fire. In our case it is 2380 degrees F, cone 10.
Bisque Fire
Preliminary firing to harden the body, usually at about cone 010 prior to glazing and susbsequent glaze firing.
Clay
a decomposed granite type rock. pure clay is expressed chemically as AL203.2SI02.2H20.
Glaze
a liquid suspension that is applied to bisque ware and when fired will melt together to form a glassy surface coating.
Pyrometric Cones
Small triangular cones made of ceramic materials that are compunded to bend and melt at specific temperatures thus enabling the potter to determine when the firing is complete.
Sgraffito
decoration achieved by scratching through a colored slip or a glaze to show the contrasting body color beneath.
Mishima
inlaid (inside) colored slip (decoration tecnique.)
Wedging
kneading. preparation of clay to remove air and make clay smooth.
Stoneware
high fired ware with slight or no absorbency. Fires to cone 6-10
****
Clay shrinks as it dries approx. 7% and another 5% in firing for a total of 12% (in our case.)
***
Banning wheel is like a lazy suzzanne, something to spin sculptures on.
