Research Paper On Lucy Flagella's Work

Pottery is the act of creating functional vessels to be enjoyed by an individual while performing everyday rituals, such as having morning tea or coffee or eating dinner with friends and family. Ceramicists are either sculptors, potters, or sculptural potters. To be a sculptor the works are not functional, unlike potters while sculptural potters create works that are not only sculptural but functional as well. My interests lean more towards functional pottery. I enjoy creating something on the potter’s wheel that someone will take pleasure in using on a daily basis. For my honors assignment, I chose to perform an artist study of Lucy Flagella’s work because I have admired her pottery for its simplicity and painterly decoration.

Lucy Flagella first discovered a love for pottery when she was a high school senior. Flagella has been creating pottery for nearly thirty nine years. Her passion lies in creating completely handmade work which creates a more personal connection with her customers. The marks left in the clay, reflect the thought and time Flagella puts into each piece. Handmade pottery is the result of the years of practice and patience spent mastering the techniques on the potter’s wheel and is the direct result of the potters love for ceramics. Flagella mainly uses porcelain clay for her pottery because of its workable creamy consistency. The majority of her works have surface decoration either carved, painted, or wax resist.
