Cells

-fundamental unit of structure and function in all living things

-smallest unit of matter that is alive

-all cells come from pre-existing cells

Tissue

-a group of cells working together to perform some function

-4 basic types:

•epithelial tissue

•connective tissue

•muscular tissue

•nervous tissue

Organ

-a group of tissues working together to perform some complex function

Organ System

-a group of organs working together to perform some highly complex activity

Organism

-organ system working together finally

Epithelial Tissue

-absorb, transport, excretes, protects, and contains nerve cells for resperation

-simple epithelium- 1 cell layer thick

-stratified epithelium- more than 1 layer thick

Simple Squamous Epithelium

Location: frog skin, lining of cheek, etc.

Function: allows passage of materials through diffusion and filtration

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Location: kidney tubules, etc

(cube shape)

Function: secretion and absorption

Simple Columnar Epithelium

(columns)

Location: lines the digestive tract, etc.

Function: absorption and enzyme secretion

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Location: lines the esophagus

Function: protects tissues from abrasion

Connective Tissues

-support and bind

Connective Cartilage Tissues

Location: entire skeleton of shark, outer ear, etc.

Function: support and renforcement

-chondrocyte: cell

-nucleus

-lacunae: jelly around nucleus

-intercellular matrix: jelly around outside of cell

Connective Bone Tissues

Location: bony skeleton

Function: support, protection, stores calcium and fat, forms blood cells, etc.

-osteocyte: cell

-canaliculus: transportation (thin lines coming off of cell)

-lucanae: house the cell (jelly around it)

-osteon: the whole circle (all the rings)

-osteonic canal: big opening

Connective Tissues: Blood

Location: within arteries and veins of mammals, etc.

Function: transport oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste, minerals, etc.

Connective Adipose Tissues

(fat)

Location: around kidneys, under skin, within abdomen, etc.

Function: energy, insulation, support and protect organs

Muscular Tissues

-allows for movement

Skeletal Muscular Tissue

-voluntary: we can control it

-nucleus on side, squished, elongated nucleus

Smooth Muscular Tissue

-involuntary: we can't control, no lines, no columns, no cubes

Cardiac Muscular Tissue

-involuntary: we can't control

-intercalated disks- speration between cells

Nervous Tissue

-conducts

-neuron

-dendrite

-cell body

-nucleus

-cytoplasm

-axon
