Why do cells need to divide |
Organisms need to grow, cells need to differientiate (become specialized), old damaged cells need to be released, and cells become too big without division. |
|
Limits to cell size *two main reasons* |
1. Information overload- A cells DNA can't keep up if it keeps growing. 2. Exchanging materials- A cells size determines how efficiently it can nutrients in and waste out. As a cell grows, the cell membrane does not grow as fast as its volume. |

When a cell diameter increases 10x |
Surface area increases 100x. Volume increases 1000x. |
