Why do cells need to divide
Organisms need to grow, cells need to differientiate (become specialized), old damaged cells need to be released, and cells become too big without division.
Limits to cell size *two main reasons*
1. Information overload- A cells DNA can't keep up if it keeps growing. 2. Exchanging materials- A cells size determines how efficiently it can nutrients in and waste out. As a cell grows, the cell membrane does not grow as fast as its volume.
When a cell diameter increases 10x
Surface area increases 100x. Volume increases 1000x.
