  • Back
Cell membrane
Acts as protective barrier to uncontrolled flow of water.
Nucleus
In Eukaryotic cells. Safely stores DNA.
Mitochondria
Creates cell's energy in both plant and animal cells
Central vacuole
Only in plant cells. Stores nutrients, breaks down waste, helps cell grow, provides pressure necessary for maintaining plant's shape.
Cytosol and cytoplasm
"filler" inside cell, may provide extensions for movement.
Cell wall
Rigid structure that supports plant cells.
Cytoskeleton
Fibers extending throughout cytoplasm, provides structure and support.
Nucleolus
Synthesizes ribosomes, in center of nucleus.
Ribosomes
Made in nucleolus, the site of protein synthesis. Free and bound ribosomes.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Attached to nucleolus, produces proteins and membranes
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesizes lipids, detoxifies drugs, metabolizes carbs.
Golgi apparatus
Modifies and sorts products from ER. Fusion of membrains possible; ER and Golgi both of the endomembrane system.
Lysosomes
Contain enzymes which digest biological molecules and recycle materials from cell.
Vesicles
membrane bound sacs, transport materials through cytoplasm
Chloroplasts
contain forms of energy, contain small amount of DNA. They survived outside of cells, have double membranes like mitochondria. Only in plant cells.
