Causes of "consolidation"
Pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, neoplasm, atelectasis (away from compressed field), areas of compressed lung (region above an effusion), ARDS
Findings of consolidation
"Increased tactile fremitus
Positive egophony (e -> a) Loud whispered pectoriloquy" |
Causes of decreased consolidation findings
Effusion, empyema, pleuritis, COPD, asthma, CF, pneumothorax (in area of pneumothorax)
Causes of dullness to percussion
All consolidation findings + all fluid buildup
Fluid buildup lung diseases
Effusion, pleuritis?, hemothroax, empyema
Air buildup disease
Atelectasis (area away from atelectasis), pneumothorax, COPD, asthma, CF, bronchiectasis
Causes of hyperresonance to percussion
Air buildup diseases
Causes of crackles
Snapping open/close of alveoli, due to fluid or restrictive lung disease. interstitial lung disease, fibrosing alveolitis, atelectasis, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, and pulmonary edema, and in the apices with tuberculosis
Causes of clubbing
Generally heart + lung disease - theory is that hypoxia -> growth factors of vasculature -> clubbing?
What are kussmaul's respirations?
deep labored breathing with normal/increased frequency
What are Cheyne stokes respirations?
Periods of deep breathing alternating with periods of apnea
What conditions have kussmaul's respirations?
Metabolic acidosis
What conditions have Cheyne stokes respirations?
Drug induced respiratory depression, CHF, brain damage (usually @ cerebral level)
