Leaving the cave

•Plato wants us to imagine what will happen if the prisoners are released from their chains , and can turn around to see what is happening.

•if the prisoner is shows he objects making the shadows he would not be able to recognise them.

•the glare from the fire will hurt his eyes

•it is time for him to leave the cave and make his way outside- doesn’t want to go suggesting that he is comfortable with his ignorance.

However the prisoner is let up through the mouth of the cave, which is ‘steep’ and ‘rugged’ as a metaphor for his struggles

Outside

As the former prisoner adjusts to his new life , his wisdom grows ,

•he realised that the sun gives structure to his life , and that it enables him to see other things as they really are.

•when the former prisoner goes back to help his friends they will see that he was hurt outside - would attempt to kill him if he tried to drag them outside.

•Plato wants to show, then that Socrates was well aware of the danger she faced in trying to bring philosophy to others .

Sun as the form of the good

Plato understanding

Plato wants us to understand that when we begin to question the world around us , when we start to wonder what is real and what is illusionary , and when we begin to ask ourselves whether we could have been wrong until now , it is a painful experience .
