Tendons

Attach muscle to bone

Ligaments

Attaches bone to bone

Origin

Beginning of a muscle

Belly

Main portion of a muscle

Insertion

End of a muscle

Sphincter

A circular band of muscle around an opening. Some are voluntary some are involuntary.

Voluntary Muscles

Muscle activity that the body can control.

EX: skeletal muscle

Involuntary Muscle

Muscle activity that the body can not control

EX: digestive muscles, lungs, heart.

Striated Muscle

Muscles with striated bands (alternating bands of light and dark muscle)

EX: heart

Smooth Muscle

Involuntary. Ex: uterus, bladder, stomach, intestine.

Biceps Brachii

On the cranial, medial surface of the humerus. Has a flexor of the elbow.

Origin of the Biceps Brachii

Distal scapula.

Insertion of the Biceps Brachii

Proximal radius

Triceps Brachii

Caudal, lateral aspect of the humerus. Has 4 heads that joint to from a common tendon that inserts at the olecranon process. Extensor to the elbow and flexor of the shoulder.

Origin of the Triceps Brachii

Distal scapula and proximal humerus.

Insertion of the Triceps Brachii

Olecranon process of the ulna.

Pelvic Limb Muscles

1. Quadriceps

2. Biceps femoris

3. Semitendinosus

4. Semimembranosus

Others:

- gluteal muscle

- gastrocnemius

Gluteal Muscle

Large muscle of the rump. Often used for injections in large animals and rodents.

3 Muscles of the Gluteal Muscle:

1. Superficial gluteal muscle

2. Middle gluteal muscle

3. Deep gluteal muscle

Gluteal Extensor

Hip

Skeletal Muscle

Voluntary/striated.

Moves bones. Source of "red" meat.

Gluteal Muscle Origin

Pelvis

Gluteal Muscle Insertion

Proximal femur.

Quadriceps Muscle

Large muscle with 4 heads, cranial to femur. Extends to the knee and flexes hip joint.

Quadriceps Insertion

Patellar tendon

Biceps Femoris

Wraps around the lateral thigh, long and superficial. Extends 3 joints.

Biceps Femoris Origin

Ventral ischium.

Biceps Femoris Insertion

Middle of the tibia.

Semitendinosus

Caudal aspect of the thigh. When the leg is weight bearing, it is a flexor. Tendon-like, thin.

Semitendinosus Origin

Ventral ischium.

Semitendinosus Insertion

Tibial crest, calcaneus.

Cardiac Muscle

Involuntary. Striated muscle.

Semimembranosus

Medial to the semitendinosus and deeper. Stifle flexor, hip extensor.

Semimembranosus Origin

Ventral ischium.

Semimembranosus Insertion

Medial femur and tibia.

Gastrocnemius

Calf muscle. Proximal and caudal tibia/fibula.

Gastrocnemius Origin

Distal end of the femur.

Gastrocnemius Insertion

Calcaneal process via the gastrocnemius tendon (Achilles tendon).

Most common muscles for IM injections (feline and canine):

Longissimus lumborum, semitendinosus and semimembranosus.

Cutaneous Muscle

Located in connective tissue just under the skin. Little to no attachment to bone. Twitches in the skin.

Longissimus Lumborum

Located in the lumbar area. Useful for IM injections. Muscle of the back.

Abdominal Muscles

Muscles of the abdominal wall are important because many surgical procedures require abdominal incisions.

4 Layers of Abdominal Muscle

1. External abdominal oblique

2. Internal abdominal oblique

3. Rectus abdominis

4. Transverse abdominis

Linus Alba

"White line". Connective tissue that surrounds the muscles. Thick band of connective tissue.

Diaphragm

Muscle of respiration. Divided the thoracic and abdominal cavities.

2 Thoracic Limb Muscles

1. Biceps brachii

2. Triceps brachii
