Fossil fuels are finite. What does this mean? |
They are being used up after than they are being formed |
What is a hydrocarbon? |
A molecule containing only hydrogen and carbon. |
Explain fractionional distillation |
Crude oil is heated at the bottom, oil with a high intermolecular force exit at the bottom as a lot of energy is needed to break them. Molecules with lower boiling point exit at the top of the column. |
Name problems in extracting crude oil |
Transporting oil can damage bird feathers, oil is getting more expensive and there is conflict between using oil for fuel or things like medicine |
What is cracking |
A process that turns large alkane molecules into smaller alkane and alkene molecules. |
Why are alkenes useful for making polymers |
They have a double bond. |
Why is the amount of fossil fuels being burnt an issue? |
It's increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and fossil fuels are becoming higher in demand |
What is the equation for incomplete combustion? |
Fuel+oxygen->carbon (monoxide)+water |
When does complete combustion occur? |
When a fuel burns in plenty of oxygen |
Is more energy released during complete or incomplete combustion |
Complete |
