Between the war and the bubonic plague, much of the population was wiped out. Since poor folk outnumbered rich folk, there were more poor people left, and in order to fill the gaps left by death, the rich folk had to relearn English to communicate with the poor folk, just it reemerging as the common language.

The estates were clergy, nobility and peasantry. An estates satire is something mocking these societal classes and the abuses inherent in them.
