What factors are considered before type of solder job

Maximum temperature of the fluid in the tube

Pressure if the fluids to be conveyed

Tube size (the larger the tube the greater the forces on the tube wall)

What is a soft solder

Soft solder is an alloy of tin or one or more antimony, copper, lead, silver and may be used to join most metals. When specifying a soft solder, the tin content is always mentioned fist

For example

30/70 solder

Means 30 tin 70 lead

Any lead bearing solder content in excess of 0.2% shall not be used in potable water lines

What is flux

And what is it’s purpose

The primary purpose of the flux is to keep the surface of the metal free if oxides during the hearing and filling process. If the oxide or scale is not removed it limits the wetting action/capillary attraction thus preventing actual penetration of the grain boundaries

Prevent oxidation

Promote wetting action

Break up oxides and float them to the top of the joint
