Why are trains examined?

All trains must be examined before departing from their originating location and may not depart until the train examiner is satisfied that the train is in a safe condition to travel.

What are the 9 types of brake examinations?

- FX1 & FX2 - full exam of whole train

- PTX - full exam one side

- MX (run around of loco) MX1 (2 x blocks added that have already been tested behind loco) & MX2 (some carriages added, never tested, just check them and 3 carriages back) - modified exam -

- AX1 - terminal yard exam by train examiner

- AX2 - when AX1 not completed - examiner watch train leaving

- DX1-roll by

How do we protect the train examiners?

Driver to place reverser key in receptacle and use train examiners key to secure it there. Driver NOT to leave the cab under any circumstances or move the loco until train examiner has completed the exam.

Who is responsible for releasing the air brake when it has been applied for train examination purposes?

The driver. The CW must not release the brake under any circumstances.

What reduction of brake pipe pressure is made by the CW when signalled by the driver to make an air brake application during train exams?

100kPa

What is the purpose of the air brake test device?

To check the air pressure on the back hose bag.

What is the minimum brake pipe pressure required at the rear of a train?

It should be 500kPa but may drop to 425kPa, but must not be any less to run the train safely.

What is the purpose of continuity tests?

To ensure there is continuous brake pipe pressure throughout the train.

What is an FX1 examination and who does it?

Train examiner checks the:

- brake equipment is operational - driver to apply brakes and when examiner is at rear of train, driver to release brakes and examiner to complete SC test. Examiner to ask driver to complete brake pipe leakage test.

- auto couplers

- springs

- running equipment

What is an FX2 examination and who does it?

F

What is an FX2 examination and who does it?

Driver checks the:

- brake equipment is operational

- auto couplers

- springs

- running equipment

What is a PTX examination?

Train examiner/driver checks ONE SIDE OF THE TRAIN AT A PLATFORM:

- brake equipment is operational

- auto couplers

- springs

What are MODIFIED EXAMINATIONS (MX)?

A modified examination is conducted after:

- vehicles are detached

- locos are changed or an assisting loco is attached

- an assisting loco is detached from behind the leading loco

- the direction of travel is reversed for a run around

What is an MX1 brake test?

Pre tested vehicles are attached to a train in a maximum of two separate portions.

Complete brake pipe leakage test.

If leakage test is passed, an MC is completed.

If leakage test fails an SC is completed.

What is an MX2 brake test?

When non-tested vehicles are attached.

Train examiner to conduct an examination as per FX1 on the non-tested vehicles.

Driver to conduct an examination as per FX2 on the non-tested vehicles.

- full service brake application and release the brakes

- ensure brakes have released on 3 vehicles (or rear of train if attached on the rear) past the coupling point

- if attached to rear, complete SC test - min 425kpa at rear

- brakes applied - check on 3 vehicles past coupling point

- driver conducts brake pipe leakage test and makes an equalising application and release brakes
