Brainstem consists of...

Mid brain, pons and medulla oblongata

Function of the brainstem

-Provides pathways for nerves.

-Houses 10 of 12 pairs of cranial nerves.

-Looks after all body's basic body functions.

-3 areas together programme autonomic behaviours.

4 points

Mid brain

-3 sections to mid brain.

- 1) Pain and pain suppression.

- 2) Coordinates eye and head movements by linking visual and auditory together.

- 3) High melanin content, precursor of dopamine.

Dopamine function

Supports basal ganglia.

Basal ganglia will not function properly without dopamine.

No/reduced dopamine = parkinson's disease.

Function of the pons

-Cerebellum grows out of pons.

-communicates with the Cerebellum.

-PNEUMOTAXIC CENTRE

PNEUMOTAXIC centre

-Within the PONS

-works with MEDULLA OBLONGATA to maintain normal breathing.

Medulla oblongata

- Where nerves cross over (decussate)

- also communicates with cerebellum.

-CARDIOVASCULAR, VASOMOTOR and RESPIRATORY CENTRES located here.

CARDIOVASCULAR CENTRE

within medulla oblongata

Regulates force and rate of the heart

VASOMOTOR CENTRE

-Within medulla oblongata

-regulates vessel diameter to regulate BP.

RESPIRATORY CENTRE

-Within medulla oblongata

-works with pons to regulate rate and depth of breathing.
