Define "hose appliance."
Any piece of hardware used in conjunction with fire hose for the purpose of delivering water. A simple way to remember the difference between hose appliances and hose tools is that water flows through appliances but not tools.
What does a valve do?
Control water flow
What are the four main types of valves?
Ball valves

Gate valves

Butterfly valves

Clapper valves
Where will you find ball valves?
In pumper discharges, fire pump piping systems, and gated wyes.
How do you know that a ball valve is open?
The handle is in line with the hose.
Where will you find gate valves?
Hydrants
Where will you find butterfly valves?
On large pump intakes.
How are most butterfly valves operated?
Most are operated using a quarter-turn handle. Some can be operated remotely with an electric motor.
Where will you find clapper valves?
In siamese appliances and pump piping to allow flow in only one direction. They prevent water from flowing out of unused ports when only one hose is connected
What's a wye appliance?
A device that splits a single hoseline into two lines. Think of a "Y."
What do you call a wye with valve-controlled outlets?
Gated wyes
What is one of the most common wye configurations?
2.5" (65mm) female inlet to two 1.5" (38mm) male outlets
What type of wye will you see used in high water volume operations?
LDH female inlet and two 2.5" (65mm) male outlets.
Are the outlets on wyes usually gated or ungated?
Gated
What's a siamese appliance?
A siamese is an appliance that merges two lines into one, using two female inlets and one male outlet.
What do you call a siamese appliance equipped with three clappered inlets instead of two?
Triamese or Manifold
Where will you see siamese appliances used?
Wherever you need high water volume in long hose lays but don't have LDH available. ALSO used to supply a ladder pipe that isn't equipped with a permanent waterway
What's a water thief appliance?
A water thief appliance is usually used in wildland operations. It splits one hoseline off into additional lines using valve-controlled outlets.
What's an LDH manifold?
This is an appliance used when a large volume of water is needed near the end of the main supply line.
What are the typical specifications of an LDH manifold appliance?
One LDH female inlet to three 2.5" (65mm) valve-controlled male outlets.
What are some nicknames for LDH manifolds?
Portable hydrants, phantom pumpers, large-diameter distributor
What is the purpose of a hydrant valve?
A hydrant valve allows a forward lay from a hydrant with only one pumper and allows an additional pumper to attach afterwards without interrupting water flow.
What is a "fitting?"
A fitting is a hardware accessory for connecting hose of different diameters and thread types.
What are the most common types of fittings?
Double-male and double-female adapters
What's a reducer?
It's a fitting that allows a larger-diameter hose to connect to a smaller-diameter hose.
What are hose plugs?
Cover fittings installed on female FDCs
What are hose caps?
Fittings that cover and close male discharge outlets
What are elbows?
Elbows are fittings that provide support for intake or discharge hose at the pumping apparatus.
What's an intake strainer?
It's a device attached to the drafting end of a hard intake (suction) to keep debris from entering the pump.
What is a hose roller (hoist)?
It's a hose tool that allows hose to be dragged over sharp corners without damage.
What's a hose jacket?
A hose jacket is a hose tool that can serve as a temporary patch on damaged hose.
What's a hose clamp?
A hose clamp can be used to stop the flow of water in a hoseline,
What three types of hose clamps will you find in service?
Screw-down, press-down, hydraulic press.
What rules should be followed when using hose clamps?
Apply the hose clamp at least 20' (6m) behind the apparatus.

Apply the hose clamp within 5' (1.5m) from the coupling on the incoming water side.

Center the hose evenly in the jaws

Close and open the clamp slowly to avoid water hammer

Stand to one side when applying or releasing any type of hose clamp to avoid injury
What's "water hammer?"
A rapid deceleration in water causing a sudden, violent increase in water pressure in a hose, potentially damaging hose, fittings, and appliances. Usually results from closing a valve or nozzle too quickly.
What's a hydrant wrench?
A wrench that opens hydrants
What's a spanner wrench (or just "spanner")?
A tool used to tighten and loosen hose couplings
What's a rubber mallet used for?
To further tighten or loosen couplings.
What's a hose bridge or a hose ramp?
A ramp or bridge that allows vehicles to drive over hose without damaging it.
What's a hose strap?
It's a strap (or rope, or chain) that can be used to pull or carry firehose, and it makes handling a pressurized hose easier. It can also be used to secure hose to ladders and such.
What's a straight roll?
It's a method of rolling hose. You start at the male end, and wrap the hose around it over and over, thus protecting the male end and leaving the female end exposed.
What's a donut roll?
A donut roll is a roll that leaves both the male and female couplings exposed, allowing a firefighter to easily grab the necessary coupling to connect to already-laid hoseline.
What's a twin donut roll?
It's a roll used to create a compact hose roll that can be easily transported and carried for special applications such as highrise operations.
What is the most common term used to describe the hose compartment on a fire apparatus?
Hose bed
What is the benefit of a split bed?
It allows hose to be loaded for a forward or reverse lay at the same time.
What's a "finish?"
An additional hose that can be quickly pulled at the beginning of a forward or reverse lay. Usually placed on top of a hose lay and connected to the end of the load.
What steps should you take when loading hose onto the apparatus?
Check gaskets and swivel before connecting any coupling

Keep the flat sides of the hose in the same plane when two sections of hose are connected

Tighten couplings hand-tight

Remove kinks and twists from the fire hose when it most be bent to form a loop in the hose bed

Make a short fold or reverse bend (a Dutchman) in the hose during the loading process so that the couplings aren't too close to the front or rear of the hose bed and will not flip over when pulled out.

Load LDH (3.5" and larger) with all couplings near the front of the bed.

Don't pack hose too tightly -- you should be able to fit a gloved hand between folds.
