Landmarks on bones that sink in.

Apophysis

A prominent proccess[a projection or outgrowth of tissue from a larger body] on a bone that has never been seperated or moveable upon.

Epiphysis

A prominent process that is developed as a seperate piece of the bone to which it is afterwards joined.

Articular depression or eminence

Articular eminence Found in the head of the femur or humerous. Articular depression found in the glenoid cavity of the humerous and acetebulum.

Non-Articular eminences or depressions

Bony landmarks that do not have to do with articulation.

Tuberoisity

A non-articular prominence which is a rough,broad, uneven elevation.

Tubericle

A prominence which is small and rough elevation.

Spine

A sharp,slender pointed eminence.

Ridge or line

A narrow , rough, eminence running some way along the surface.

fossa

A depression which is a hollow found on the surface of the end of the bone. Ex:Coronoid Fossa and Hypophyseal Fossa, Olecranon Fossa.

groove

A narrow hollow depression. Ex Phalangeal Groove,

furrow

A slight depression in the smoothness of a surface.

fissure

A deep groove or furrow usually interchangleable with a sulcus. Like the fissure which divides the left and right hemisphere.

notch

An indentation,especially along the edge of a bone or other organ. SUch as the greater sciatic notch.

Non articular depressions and eminences

Utilized for the purpose of muscular or ligament attachement, and well marked typically for the muscularity of the subject.
