ALBUMIN
= Protein in the Blood;
**maintains the proper amount of water (H20) in the blood
ANTIBODY
= Protein (IMMUNOGLOBULIN)
**Produced by: LYMPHOCYTES in response to -- Bacteria, Viruses, or other Antigens
**this is SPECIFIC to an Antigen & Inactivates it!
ANTIGEN
= substance (usually Foreign) that STIM's ---> Production of an ANTIBODY
BASOPHIL
= Granulocytic (WBC) w/ granules that stain BLUE when exposed to a BASIC dye.
BILIRUBIN
= Orange-Yellow PIGMENT (in Bile);
**Formed by the breakdown (of Hemoglobin) when RBCs die.
(CSF)
COLONY-STIMULATING FACTOR
= PROTEIN that STIM's ---> growth & proliferation of WBCs (aka...GRANULOCYTES)
DIFFERENTIATION
= change in Structure & Fxn. of a cell as it matures;
**Specialization
ELECTROPHORESIS
= method of separating SERUM PROTEINS (by Electrical Charge)
EOSINOPHIL
= GRANULOCYTIC (WBC) w/ granules that stain RED w/ ACIDIC dye, "Eosin";
*Assoc'd. w/ -- ALLERGIC RXNs
(EPO)
ERYTHROPOIETIN
= HORMONE Secreted by the KIDNEYS that STIM's formation of (RBCs)
FIBRIN
= PRROTEIN THREADS that forms the basis of Blood Clot
FIBRINOGEN
= PLASMA PROTEIN that is converted to --> FIBRIN in the clotting process
GLOBULINS
= part of blood containing DIFF. Plasma Proteins, Immunoglobins, & Alpha/Beta Globins
(are examples)
GRANULOCYTE
= (WBC) w/ numerous DARK-staining granules:
1) EOSINOPHIL,
2) NEUTROPHIL,
3) BASOPHIL
HEME
= Iron (Fe)-containing NONprotein portion of the Hemoglobin Molecule
HEMOGLOBIN
= Blood PROTEIN containing IRON (Fe);
**carries Oxygen (in RBCs)
HEPARIN
= ANTI-COAGULANT found in Blood & Tissue Cells
HEMOLYSIS
= Destruction or Breakdown of Blood (RBCs)
IMMUNE RXN
= Response of the Immune System to foreign invasion
IMMUNOGLOBULIN
= PROTEIN (Globulin) w/ ANTIBODY activity;
**Ex's = IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, IgD
** Immuno means "protection"
LEUKOCYTE
= (WBC)
LYMPHOCYTE
= MONOnuclear LEUKOCYTE (WBC) that produces Antibodies!
MACROPHAGE
= MONOCYTE that migrates (from Blood to --> Tissue spaces)
**it is a Large PHAGOCYTE
MEGAKARYOCYTE
= Large PLATELET PRECURSOR CELL!!

***Found in: Bone Marrow
MONOCYTE
= Large MONOnuclear Phagocytic Leukocyte (WBC) formed in the: Bone Marrow;
**these become--> MACROPHAGES (as they leave the blood & enter Body Tissue)
NEUTROPHIL
= GRANULOCYTIC (WBC) Leukocyte Formed in the: Bone Marrow;
a PHAGOCYTE w/ Neutral-staining Granules;
PLASMA
= LIQUID portion of Blood;
**contains: H20, Proteins, Nutrients, Hormones, & Vitamins
PLASMAPHERESIS
= REMOVAL (of Plasma) from withdrawn blood by CENTRIFUGE. Collected cells are Retransferred back into the Donor. Fresh-Frozen Plasma or Salt Solution = used to replace withdrawn Plasma
PLATELET
= SMALLEST Blood Cell (THROMBOCYTE);
**these cells clump @ sites of injury to prevent bleeding and facilitate clotting
PROTHROMBIN
= PLASMA PROTEIN;
**converted to ---> THROMBIN in the clotting process
RETICULOCYTE
=IMMATURE Erythrocyte (RBC) w/ a Network of Strands (RETICULIN) that are seen after staining the cell w/ special dyes
Rh-Factor
= ANTIGEN on RBCs of Rh-(+) POSITIVE ppl;
*Factor was 1st identified in blood of a Rhesus Monkey
SERUM
= PLASMA MINUS CLOTTING PROTEINS & CELLS, Clear, Yellowish fluid that separates from Blood when it is allowed to clot. It is formed from PLASMA, but does NOT contain: Protein-Coagulation Factors
STEM CELL
= UNspecialized cell that gives rise to ---> Mature, Specialized forms; a HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL = PROGENITOR for all diff. types of Blood Cells
THROMBIN
= ENZYME that converts--> FIBRINOGEN during coagulation
THROMBOCYTE
= Platelet
