Hollow mouth snaffle

Action: thick and spreads pressure over a larger diameter

Severity: Mild but may be uncomfortable for horses with small mouths or thick tongues

Dr. Bristol snaffle

Action: Bc it is a multi joint snaffle horses are less likely to lean on it

Pressure on tongue and bars

Angled plate used for more control but may not encourage a quality contact

Severity: Moderate severity bc of its pronounced tongue pressure

Loose ring snaffle

Action: Increased mobility prevents horse from fixing the bit and leaning

Prevents evasion of contact but may pinch of improperly fitted

Severity: Mild unless the lips are pinched

Bit burr

Made of stiff plastic or rubber with bristles

Prevents horse from leaning and encourages straightness but may discourage chewing and relaxation of the jaw into the contact

Double twisted wire snaffle

Action: Act severely on tongue bars and corners of the mouth

Double Nutcracker effect acts on palate

Severity: Quite severe because it has a pinching effect on the tongue and abrasive surface and is very thin

D ring snaffle

Action: Refines turning aids and prevents bit from sliding through mouth

Non pinching reduces mobility

Severity: Mild bc of its flat surface against the lips

Gag bit

Action: pressure on poll lips and corners

Severity: severe see gag bridle

Boucher

Action: leverage and slight poll pressure bc it hangs it decreases pressure on hard

Severity: moderate bc poll pressure but less bc less bar pressure

Curb bit

Action: leverage but

Exerts poll and chin groove pressure to encourage flexion

Ba4s tongue and roof if ported

Severity: dependent on length of shank and port

Elevator bit

Action: pressure on lips and poll

Rein pressure slides bit up causing elevation

Severity: severe see gag bridle

Kimberwicke

Action: leverage optional

Upper slot: tongue pressure

Lower: leverage

Chin groove pressure bc curb chain

Lips and bars

Severity: dependent on leverage and mouthpiece

Bit guard

Action:prevents pinching and sliding

Lateral guiding effect

Lip strap

Action:goes through fly link to keep horses form mouthing the shank

Decreases mobility of curb chain

Rubber snaffle

Action: dependent on mouthpiece

Soft surface on bars and lips

Severity: mild bc of softness and give of rubber

Mullen mouth

Action: even pressure on tongue and bars

May encourage leaning

Severity:mild bc of its limited bar contact

Straight mullens are more severe bc of palate pressure

Curb with bradoon

Action: bradoon snaffle effect regulates horizontal flexion

Curb regulates vertical flexion

Severity: dependent on skill of rider

Single jointed standard weight snaffle

Action: tongue lips bars palate

Enables mobility of one side of bit

Severity: Mild to moderate dependent on thick was and size

Full cheek snaffle

Action: lateral guiding effect

Leverage with keepers

Concentrates pressure on bars and tongue

Severity: Mild unless big has plate and used without keepers

French link snaffle

Action: link lies flat and conforms to tongue

Increased mobilty to encourage relaxation

Severity: mild bc multijoint

Curb chain

Action: fulcrum for curb lever

Intensifies ongue pressure

Chin groove pressure

Causes horse to lower head with poll pressure

Severity: Moderate to severe dependent on tightness shank length and skill of rider

Eggbutt snaffle

Action: lessened mobility keeps but still

Steady tongue lip bar pressure

Lateral support

Severity: mild

Pelham with port

Curblike leverage

Snaffle rain

Port: tongue relief pressure on palate

Severity: dependent on use of curb rein and lenth of shank

Slow twist snaffle

Action: edges create clearly defined pressure points

Severity: severe bc abrasive surface
