Why is Binomial Nomenclature Useful
1. It is a shorthand way of talking about an organism; saves us having to use long-winded descriptive phrases to refer to it

2. It carries information on relationships: the generic name tells the group the organism belongs to and the specific epithet identifies which member of the group you are talking about
What are the five groups of vertebrates
They are Amphibians, Birds, Fish, Mammals and Reptiles
What are the Features of Mammals
Hair, Give birth to live young, Produce milk and are Warm blooded
What are the Feature of Birds
Feathers, Lay Hard shell eggs, Warm blooded, hollow bones.
What are the Features of Amphibians
Moist skin, Lay eggs in water, eggs coated in jelly
What are the Features of Fish
Wet scales, live in water, Fins, Breathe using gills
What are the Features of Reptiles
Cold blooded, dry scales, leathery shelled eggs
Key feature of Vertebrates
Bilateral symmetry, have a coelomic cavity (cavity with fluid between the stomach and skin, Notochord (precursor of human backbones), Dorsal Nerve ( Nerve in Penis/ Vagina), Complex Body tissue and Organs.
The main invertebrates groups are...
Arhtropds, Molluscs, Echinoderms, Cnidarians, Flatworms, Roundworms, Sponges and Annelids
Features of Invertebrates
No internal skeleton, 95-97% of all organisms in the world, Exoskeletons or a completely soft body, and have no cell walls
What does Arthropod mean
It's an organism with segmented bodies, jointed legs, exoskeleton and joined appendages
Arthropods are divided in different Groups
Ok. You know that
How do you identify organisms
Observation. Toes, Fur, habitat, diet...
What are grouping together organisms are called
It is called Binomial Nomenclature or just Taxonomy
What are dichotomous keys
Refer to page 24
What is Variation?
Definition: The occurrence of an organism in more than one distinct colour or form.
Where does Variation Occur
Variation happens during mitosis, when a baby's cell multiply. If the Variation doesn't kill the baby and if it can reproduce; it will be passed down to the next generation
What is the Definition of 'species'
Definition:a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomial, e.g. Homo sapiens
Adaptations of a Camel
-Khaki beige camouflage
-Stores fluid in their body (lots)
-Extracts moisture from their own waste (internally)
-Food store in humps
-Thick fur to retain warmth
Adaptation of a polar bear
-White fur
-Hollow fur to trap air, retaining heat
-Strong swimmers
-Smaller extremities (ears, nose, penis)
Adaptation of Frogs
-Hibernates during the winter
-Powerful back legs
-Projectile tongue
-Gill as tadpole
-Lung as frog
Good Luck.
