PHTACR

What is a fact?

Something know to be true

What is a theory

When a hypothesis is tested and confirmed by scientists.

Define and give another name for Independent variable.

Manipulated variable. The variable that is changed on purpose by the experimenter.

MIX

Define and give another name for Dependent variable.

Responding variable. The variable the responds or the effects of the experiment.

DRY

What is a control?

The control group is the standard that everything else is compared to.

What are constants?

Constants are factors that are NOT allowed to change in an experiment.

How many variables can be tested in a controlled experiment?

One

What is the difference between spontaneous generation, abiogenesis, and biogenesis?

Spontaneous generation and abiogenesis mean life could arise from non-living matter.

Biogenesis means all living things come from other living things.

What did Redi test and when? Name the IV, DV, constants, and control.

1668- Redi tested where maggots came from

IV: covering on container

DV: maggots apereance

Constants: jars, meat, location, temp., time

Control: jar left open

What did Spalanzani test and when? Name the IV, DV, constants, and control.

1767- if microbes form in air then boiling will kill them. (Boiled broth)

IV: Covering on jars

DV: amount of microbes in jars

Constants: jar, broth, boiling temp, time boiled, location

Control: jar left open

What did Pasteur test and when? Name the IV, DV, constants, and control.

1864- Microbes come from dust and cells of other organisms not the air.

IV: neck shape

DV: microbes found in broth

Constants: broth, boiling temp, boiled time

Control: flask without curves neck.

What are the IV, DV, Constants, and control in the miracle grow experiment?

IV: amount of fertilizer in each plant

DV: height of plant

Constants: pot, seed, dirt, location, water, light

Control: plant with no fertilizer

What are the IV, DV, Constants, and control in the water flea experiment?

IV: amount of caffeine given

DV: heartbeat of flea

Constants: water, mineral content, am out of bacteria for food, amount of light, temperature

Control: Fleas without caffeine given

What is a hypothesis? When is it useful. How is it written. What does it contain?

A proposed answer to a question. Useful only if its testable. written using an IF THEN statement. Contains dependent and independent variables.

Who did the meat maggot experiment and when?

Redi- 1668

Who did the boil broth experiment and when?

Spalanzani - 1767

Who did the S shaped flask experiment and when?

Pasteur - 1864
