Differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and prokaryotic cells do not. Eukaryotes have more than one chromosone, prokaryotes have only one.
Difference between plant and animal cells
Plant cells have a cell wall, animal cells do not.
Function of cells
The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism.
Nucleus
Holds DNA, which code for proteins
Found in eukaryotic cells |
Ribosome
Makes proteins from codes held by nucleus or chromosomes
Mitochondria
Performs cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> C6H2O + 6CO2 + ATP Produces ATP, cell's usable form of energy, from food an organism makes or eats Found in eukaryotic cells |
Chloroplasts
Performs photosynthesis
6H2O + 6CO2 -> C6H12O6 + 6O2 Found in cells of eukaryotic producers |
Cell Wall
Outside of membrane
Offers protection, strength and structure Found in plants, algae, fungi; prokaryotes NOT FOUND IN ANIMAL CELLS |
