How does human life begin? |
It begins when a sperm cell (male gamete) meets and fuses with and egg cell (female gamete) |
What is fertilisation? |
It is the fusion of the male and female gamete |
Where is the sperm made? |
It is made in the testes in the male reproductive system and the egg is also made in the ovary of the female reproductive system |
What happens when the sperm fuses with the egg? |
It fertilises the egg and this fertilised egg can then begin to divide repeatedly to eventually form many millions of cells which develop into a baby in the mothers womb |
Explain what happens during intercourse |
The man's penis fill with blood and becomes hard so that it can be placed inside the woman's vagina. A mixture of sperm cells and seminal fluid called semen is released into the vagina. The sperm now swim up through the uterus and into the fallopian tube |
Explain the four stages of fertilisation leading to pregnancy |
An egg leaves the ovary and passes into the fallopian tube Fertilisation occurs in the fallopian tube The fertilised egg divides and moves towards the uterus The embryo becomes lodged in the prepared lining of the uterus |
What happens during pregnancy? |
The embryo develops in the uterus protected inside a bag of fluid called amniotic fluid which cushions the developing embryo A tube called the umbilical cord connects the embryo to the placenta which is rich in blood vessels. In the placenta food and oxygen from the mother's blood pass into the baby's blood. Also water such as cabin dioxide pass from the baby's blood into the mother's blood |
What happens during the birth of a baby? |
The birth begins when the uterus muscles start to contract which is also known as labour. The bag of amniotic fluid bursts and further contractions push the baby out usually head first. The umbilical cord is clamped and then cut. Shortly afterwards the placenta is also pushed out |
What do natural methods aim to do? |
Natural methods of contraption aim to detect the day on which ovulation takes place and then to avoid intercourse during the fertile period |
What do artificial methods involve? |
Artificial methods involve preventing the sperm and egg from meeting by using a condom. Such methods prevent fertilisation from taking place. The contraceptive pill uses chemicals to prevent ovulation |
