asexual reproduction
The reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent.
autotroph
An organism that makes its own food.
binary fission
A form of asexual reproduction in which one cell divides to form two identical cells.
binomial nomenclature
The naming system for organisms in which each organism is given a two-part name - a genus name and a species name.
carnivore
An animal that only eats other animals.
cell
The basic unit of structure and function in organisms.
cilia
The hairlike projections on the outside of cells that move in a wavelike manner.
classification
The process of grouping things based on their similarities.
conjugation
The process in which a unicellular organism transfers some of its genetice material to another unicellular organism.
decomposer
An organism that breaks down the large molecules from wastes and the remains of dead organisms into small molecules and returns important materials to the soil and water.
endospore
A small, rounded, thick-walled, resting cell that forms inside a bacterial cell.
eukaryote
An organism with cells that contain nuclei and other cell structures.
flagellum
A long, whiplike structure that helps a unicelluar organism move.
genus
A classification grouping that consists of a number of similar, closely related species.
herbivore
An animal that eats only plants.
heterotroph
An organism that cannot make its own food.
kingdom animal
Animals are multicellular eukaryotes that are heterotrophs.
kingdom archaebacteria
Archaebacteria are unicellular prokaryotes. They can be autotrophic or heterotrophic.
kingdom eubacteria
Eubacteria are unicellular prokaryote and they can be autotrophic or heterotrophs. Their chemical makeup separates them from archaebacteria.
kingdom fungi
Fungi are multicellular eukaryotes, but a few, such as yeast are unicellular. Fungi are found almost everywhere on land, but only a few live in water. All fungi are heterotrophs. Most fungi feed on dead or decaying organisms.
kingdom plant
All plants are multicelluar eukaryotes. In addition they are autotrophs. Some plants produce flowers, while other plants do not.
kingdom protist
Protists are sometimes called the "odds and ends" kingdom because the members of this kingdom are so different from one another. Some protists are unicelluar and some are multicelluar. Some are heterotrophs and some are autotrophs. All protists are eukaryotes, which are organisms whose cells contain nuclei.
nucleus
The contol center of the cell that directs the cells' activities and determines the cells characteristics, also, the central core of an atom containing protons and usually neutrons.
omnivore
An animal that eats both plants and animals.
organism
A living thing.
prokaryote
An organism whose cells lack a nucleus and some other cell structures.
pseudopod
A "false foot" or temporary bulge of the cell membrane used for feeding and movement in some protozoans.
sexual reproduction
The reproduction process that involves two parents whose genetic material is combined to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents.
species
A group of similar organisms whose members can mate with one another and produce fertile offspring.
spore
A tiny cell that is able to grow into a new organism.
taxonomy
The scientific study of how living things are classified.
unicellular
Single-celled
vascular tissue
The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tube-like structures.
