Digestion

The breakdown of food into particles that are small enough to pass into body cells

Sequence of digestion

Ingestion- Taking in food

Digestion - Breaking down food

Absorption - absorbing nutrients into blood

Egestion - Removal of unabsorbed and undigested material

Isabel Dates Adam Evans

Teeth

Incisors - Cutting slicing and biting

Canines - Grip stab and tear

Molars - crush and chew

PreMolars - crush and chew

Mechanical Digestion

Carried out by teeth, results in smaller particles of food

Chemical Digestion

Takes place due to the action of Amylase, found in saliva.

Saliva consists of water, salts, mucous, and Amylase, and lysozyme.

Peristalsis

Peristalsis moves food through the alimentary canal.

In the stomach it helps to break down food mechanically.

In the small intestine it moves food forward and back.

In the large intestine it forces water into the rectum

Role of Fibre

Fibre absorbs and stores water causing waste to expand and muscles to contract.

Food in the Stomach

Food is digested in the Stomach by gastric juice.

It consists of pesinogen, mucous and hydrochloric acid.

The stomach protects itself from self digestion by lining itself with mucous, and the cells that line the stomach are tightly packed.

Role of Pancreas

-Secretes Insulin and digestive materials which form pancreatic juice

Starch ______ amylase_____ maltose

Lipids________lipase_______ fatty acids and glycerol

Role of Liver

- Produces Bile

- Breaks down amino acids to form urea

- Stores vitamins

- Produces heat

Bile: Salts pigments and water

Made in the liver, stored in the gall bladder

Emulisfies lipids

Small Intestine

Composed of dueodenum and illium

Dueodenum -
