Autosome(s)

A non-sex chromosome, not a gamete

Linked Genes

Genes on the same chromosome

Sex-linked Trait

A trait determined by genes found on a sex chromosome

Lethal Recessive

When both X chromosomes alleles are recessive, the result can be death, or malformation. This is more frequent in males.

Name the three parts of the Chromosomal Theory

1. Chromosomes carry genes

2. Paired chromosomes (homologous) segregate during meiosis

3. Sex cells (gametes) have half the number of chromosomes that a somatic cell has; 23

Female Sex Chromosome is represented as:

XX

A male sex chromosome is represented as:

XY

Like a gene compass

Barr Body

Dark spot in the centromere of a X chromosome, in females. One X chromosome will have this, and the other will not, making the X chromosome with the Barr body inactive (no trait).

Linkage group

A group of linked genes on a chromosome

Locus (loci)

The specific location along a chromosome where a particular gene is found

Marker Gene

Easy to trace gene used to trace another, more difficult to find gene.

A marker gene must be on the same chromosome.

What is the expected linked gene ratio? What is it actually? Why?

a) 9:3:3:1

b) 3:1

c) Linked genes, on the same chromosome, do NOT separate independently

Crossing Over

Exchange of DNA from one chromosome to another during the synapsids phase of meiosis

How do we map chromosomes?

We take the percentage of the "distance" of two chromosomes, and use them to find the locus. If the percentage is a smaller number, the two chromosomes are "closer" together. If the percentage is a larger number, the two chromosomes are "further" apart.

ie) 1% is 1 map unit (mu) apart

12% is 12 map units apart

Rosalind Franklin

Created the X-Ray Diffraction Theory and produced the first image of DNA

Watson & Crick

Stole the X-ray Diffraction and used other known information to piece together the first structure of DNA with a 3D model. They won the novel prize.

AB blood is ____________ to each other. O blood is ___________ to type A or B.

a) codominant

b) recessive
