What is Dehydration Synthesis?
. The process by which larger molecules are formed by the removal of water from two smaller molecules.
What is Hydrolysis?
. The process by which a larger molecule is broken down inot two smaller molecules. Water is taken up at the broken bond site.
What are organic Compounds?
. Compounds that contain carbon atoms that are linked together.
What are inorganic compounds?
Compunds that don't contain linked carbon atoms.
What are the 4 major types of organic molecules important in biology?
1. Carbohydrates
2.Lipids
3.Proteins
4.Nucleic Acids
What is a carbohydrate?
A carbohydrate can be a single sugar or a polymer of many sugars.
What do carbohydrates contain? and what is the ratio?
Carbohydrates contain CHO. Carbon, Hydrogen and oxygen. The ratio is 1:2:1
What is the purpose of Carbohydrates?
. Source of energy for Cellular Respiration
.Structural material
What are monosaccharides?
They have three common isomers (Possess dif. qualities with same # atoms) what are they?
. Are a single sugar=C6H12O6
.Glucose, Fructose, and Galactose are isomers.
What are the types of Carbohydrates?
Disaccharides- formed by the joining of 2 monoshaccharieds through Dehydration synthesis.

. Polysaccharides-Formed by the union of many monosaccharides by dehydration synthesis.
What are the 3 common isomers of Disaccharides?
1. Sucrose
2. Maltose
3. Lactose
What are the types of polysaccharides?
Starch, Glycogen, and cellulose.
What do lipids contain and what is the ratio?
Contain CHO carbon,hydrogen,oxygen.

.Ratio of H to O is greater than 2 to 1.
What is the purpose of Lipids?
. Long term energy storage, Structural material.
What are the types of lipids?
a)Triglycerides
ex. Fat, oil

B) Phospholipides

C) Waxes

D) Steroids
How much of your body weight does protein make up?
17%
.After water is the most abundant molecule in body
What is the purpose of protein?
Cell Structure ex. major part of muscle, skin, nerves

Cell Function
ex. chemical messenger-hormones, hemoglobin-transport
Movement-Contractile proteins
Catalysis of cell reactions-enzymes.

Defense against foreign substances- antibodies
Define Protein.
A large molecule made of one or more polypeptide chains folded and coiled into a specific shape.
Define polypeptide Chains
Polymers of amino acid arranged in a specific order and linked by peptide bonds.
What are Amino acids?
How many are essential?
How are they obtained?
.The structural subunit of proteins
.8 are essential
. Must be obtained from food
