What is immunocytochemistry? What is it used for?
Immunocytochemistry is the use of antibodies that can detect specific proteins. It's used to reveal where in a cell a specific protein is located.
What is the maximum resolution of optical microscopes? Electron microscopes?
Optical microscopes have a maximum resolution of 1 micro-meter. Electron microscopes have a maximum resolution of 2 nano-meters,
What four features of a cell are not present in animal cells?
-Central vacuole tonoplast
-Cell wall
-Chloroplast
-Plasmodesmata
What three features of a cell are not present in plant cells?
-Flagellum
-Centrosome
-Lysosome
What are the components of the endomembrane system?
The Endoplasmic Reticulum (including the smooth ER and the rough ER) and the Golgi apparatus.
What does the centrosome do?
The centrosome is involved with cell division (mitosis and meiosis)
What do the flagella do?
They help with cell motility
What do microvilli do?
Microvilli increase surface area of the cell.
What are the 5 roles of organelles? Where do these things happen?
1. Information storage/processing/execution in the nucleus
2. Protein, carbohydrate, and lipid synthesis in the endomembrane system
3. Energy storage in lipid and polysaccharide granules
4. Energy metabolism in the chloroplast and mitochondrion
5. Structural and transport functions in the cytoskeleton and plasma membrane
What is a nucleolus?
A nucleolus consists of ribosomes and RNA. It's the site of synthesis in ribosomes.
What are chromatin?
Chromatin consist of DNA and its associated proteins, in particular a group of proteins called histones.
What are the components of the endoplasmic reticulum?
The ER consists of a series of tubules called cisternae, and an internal compartment called the luman.
What's the important characteristic of the rough ER? Where do synthesized polypeptides go?
The Rough ER has ribosomes attached to it, which synthesize polypeptides. Those with no address information are secreted out of the cell, and others are transported to the Golgi apparatus.
Where are ribosomes found?
-Free in the cytoplasm
-Bound to the ER
-In mitochondria and chloroplasts
What are the 2 main products of the Golgi apparatus?
Lysosomes and secretory vesicles
