What is CHW equilibrium?
A null model for evolution. Castle-Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium states that under a given set of conditions, population gene frequencies do not change from one generation to the next.
What is Directional selection?
A type of natural selection in which individuals at one or the other end of the values for a trait are favored.
What is Discriptive selection?
A type of natural selection in which individuals possessing extreme valuves for a trait are favored.
What is gene flow?
Movements of alleles from one population to another. Also called migration.
What are gene frequencies?
Allelic and genotypic frequencies in a population.
Macroevolution
Large scale changes in the history of life.
Microevolution
Heritable changes that occur within populations, over relatively short periods of time.
Mutation
Heritable changes in the DNA.
Nonrandom Mating
Mating that occur at frequencies greater or less than the proportional representation in a population.
Random Mating
Matings at a frequency that is proportional to each geneotypes representation in the population.
Stabilizing selection
A type of natural selection in which individuals at or near the mean value for a trait are favored.
spontaneous generation
Lamarck- believed that life arose from non-life, and organisms became more complex as they responded to changes to the environment
uniformitarianism
Lyell's bookPrinciples of Geology- concept states that natural geologic processes were uniform in frequency and magnitude over time. Could explain the formation of a canyon, from erosion.
catastrophism
A short lived cataclysmic event.
