Mitosis

The division of a single nucleus into two identical nuclei. Mitosis and cytokinesis make up the mitotic (M) phase of the cell cycle

Homologous

Identical. Matched in length, centromere position, and staining pattern. Chromosones that carry the same genes.

Karyotype

an ordered display of magnified images of an individual's chromosomes arranged in pairs. Allow for the Observation of homologous chromosome pairs, number, and structure. Can ID genetic defects.

Polyploid

More than two chromosome sets. Occurs from errors in mitosis or meiosis. Observed in many plant species. Less frequent in animals.

Turner's Syndrome

Affects females, missing a sex chromosome (XO). Look like little girls, infertile

Klinefelter Syndrome

Affects males, extra X chromosome (XXY). Female body characteristics, infertile

Centromeres

The region of a duplicated chromosome where two sister chromatids are joined. Divides at the onset of anaphase

Centrosome

Microtubules originate from these.

Chromatids

Attached together by centromere

Binary Fission

Prokaryote reproduction. Divides in half

Interphase

Prophase

Prometaphase

Metaphase

Anaphase

Telophase and Cytokinesis
