Brutal violence destroys cultures. The barbarian destroyed Rome. -Even barbarian kings can become Christians. The emperor ClOVIS was converted to Christianity -Europe was very vulnerable, fact observed by the Vikings attacks. -Foreign attacks can change how a society works. For example, after Viking attacks, Europe changed to Feudalism in order to protect themselves. -Religion played a big role, for example when the pope crowned Charlemagne.

-Church and State were dependent on one another -During the Medieval period, the church became a powerful force in Europe. most territories were under direct rule of the Pope -The Pope was the one that granted power to the rulers. -People with political power could nominate people to church offices. - During the Crusades state and church worked together , one to conquer land, the other to spread the gospel.
