What are the effect of aging on the cardiovascular system?
heart rate is slightly lower and stroke volume is slightly higher leading to no change in CO, vascular system is less compliant, at rest SBP is increased and DBP is unchanged, baroreceptor sensitivity decreases with aging, degeneration of the conducting system
How is respiration and ventilation affected by aging?
closing capacity and closing volume are increased with aging, residual volume and FRC are increased, VC, TLC and PaO2 progressively decrease
How does aging affect renal function?
GFR and renal tubular fxn decrease; creatinine does not increase in elderly due to decreased muscle mass
How is hepatic function affected by aging?
hepatic blood flow and protein binding decrease with aging and this makes elderly people prone to relative drug overdose
How is the GI system affected by aging?
decreased gastric emptying
Why should you be careful about positioning in elderly patients?
skin is less well vascularized and more prone to pressure necrosis
Why are elderly typically more sensitive to drugs?
decreased hepatic fxn(decreased hepatic blood flow and protein binding), decreased renal fxn(decreased GFR), decreased total body water(decreased volume of distribution), effects of drug may be intensified by decreased number of receptors
How should you adjust local anesthetic dose in patients for spinal anesthesia in elderly?
decrease the dose
