What are physiologic needs?
oxygen, circulation, water-salt balance, food balance, acid-base balance, waste elimination, normal temp, sleep, rest, relaxation, activity, exercise, engergy, comfort, stimulation, cleanliness, sexuality
What are safety needs?
protection from physical harm, psychological threat, freedom from pain, physiologic or psychological stability, dependence(trust), predictable, orderly world
What are self-esteem needs?
sense of usefulness, high evaluation of self, sense of adequacy, self-reliance, goal achievement, masterly and competence, independence, endurance
What are self-actualization needs?
personal growth and maturity, awareness of potention, increased or continued learning, full or continued development of potential, id of values or priorities, spiritual, religious, or philosophic satisfaction, increased creativity, increased reality perception and/or probelm-solving ability, less rigid conventionality, less of the familiar, more of the novel, greater satisfaction in beauty, increased pleasantness or pleasure, less of the simple, more of the complex
What are basic needs?
common to all people and meeting these needs is essential to the health and survival of all people
What is Maslow's theory?
holistic approach that includes both physiologic and psychosocial needs, needs are ranked according to how crtitical they are to survival, lower level needs must be met before higher level needs can be satisfied, basis for assessment and care planning, once a need is met the individual is no longer aware of it

physiologic, safety and security, love and belonging, self esteem, self actualization
What are characteristics of basic needs?
everyone has the same basic needs, needs are met based on individual priorities, basic needs must generally be met, but some needs can be deferred but not for long or will experience an imbalance, failure to meet basic needs results in homestatic imbalance, may be felt by external or internal stimuli, response to a need is a result of learned experience and values, needs can be satisfied in healthy and unhealthy ways, needs are interrelated
What are some factors affecting ability to meet needs?
illness, sgnifican relationships, self-concept, developmental stage
How are needs prioritiezed?
individual perception(may have to assist client in seeing need), if situation is life-threatening, health may hamper abliity to meet needs, sociocultural background, support persons(who is available to help meet needs)
What is the importance of basic needs in nursing?
enables nurses to: understand behavior in objective ways and respond therapeutically, utilize a framework for the nursing process, recognize situations that can lead to unmet needs and the manner in which a client conveys the need, assit people to develop, grow, and move toward self-acutalization
