Perfusion

The flow of blood or other fluid from an artery through the vascular bed of tissue

Hypoxia

A decrease in the level of oxygen (below normal) in inspired gases, arterial blood, or tissue

Airway Obstruction

Respiratory dysfunction that produces reduced airflow, usually on expiration. Can be caused by a local process, such as a foreign body or excess tissue; or can be caused by a generalized process, such as asthma or emphysema.

Sellick maneuver

The application of pressure to the cricoid cartilage to prevent regurgitation during tracheal intubation.

Surfactant

A chemical film that helps the alveoli to glide past one another and also prevents alveolar collapse.

Ventilation

The exchange of gasses between the lungs and the atmosphere that occurs with breathing.

Hypoxemia

Below normal value of oxygen in the arterial blood.

Respiration

The exchange of air between the lungs and the atmosphere. Provides oxygen to tissues for use in the synthesis of organic fuel molecules and helps remove waste products, such as carbon dioxide.

Pleuritis

Inflammation of the membranes lining the lungs.

Epiglottis

A leaf-shaped plate of flexible cartilage, located at the base of the tongue, which serves as a safe-guard valve over the larynx during the act of swallowing.
