They are tested in a laboratory to check that they are not toxic, and later they are trialled using human volunteers. At this point, any potential side effects should show themselves.

1: The drugs are tested using computer models and human cells grown in the laboratory.


2: Giving a known amount of the substance to the animals, then monitoring them carefully for any side-effects.


3: They are tested on volunteers. Then are tested on people with the illness to ensure they are safe and that they work.

Explain the flaws in the original development of thalidomide.

Found to damage the development of unborn babies, it mainly effected the arms or legs of the babies being very short or incompletely formed.
