Basilar membrane
The membrane that forms the floor of the organ of Corti. It is nonuniform in width and thickness, allowing it to respond differenctly to different frequencies of sound ( tonotopically). The basilar membrane contained thousands of hair cells, the receptor cells for the auditory system.
