What is the difference between a decoration and an award?

A decoration is a distinctively designed mark of honor denoting heroism or meritorious and/or outstanding service and/or achievement for individuals and units


An award is recognition given to individuals or units for certain acts or services, or badges, accolades, emblems, citations, commendations, and streamers

What is a Medal?

A term used to includes the three categories of awards, namely: decorations, Army Good Conduct Medals (AGCMs), and service medals.

What is meant by meritorious achievement?

An act which is well above the expected performance of duty.

What is meant by meritorious service?

Distinguished by a succession of outstanding acts of achievement over a sustained period of time.

What is the objective of the DA Military Awards Program?

To provide tangible recognition for acts of valor, exceptional service or achievement, special skills or qualifications, and acts of heroism not involving actual combat

What are the categories in which individual awards are grouped?

No military decoration will be awarded more than 2 years after the act or period of service to be honored. However, what decoration is the exception?

While clearly an individual decoration, how does the Purple Heart (PH) differ from all other decorations?

An individual is not "recommended" for the PH decoration; rather, he or she is entitled to it upon meeting specific criteria

No individual is automatically entitled to an award upon departure from an assignment; therefore, awards presented in conjunction with a PCS will be limited to exceptional cases. So outside these exceptional cases, what are appropriate means to recognize departing personnel?

Certificates of achievement and letters of commendation or appreciation

Who may recommend a Soldier for award of a decoration?

The recommending official must have been senior in grade or have first-hand personal knowledge of the event at the time of the action(s) or service to the individual being recommended for an award.


Recommending officials who did not personally witness the action must have been associated, by virtue of their position in the command, with the incident and/or the individual being recommended for the award.

What medal is awarded only by the President of the United States?

The Medal of Honor (MOH)
