Ecosystems

Made up of all the interacting biotic and abiotic features in a specific area. Within each ecosystem, there are numerous species.

Populations

A group of interbreeding organisms of one species in a habitat.

Community

All of the populations of different organisms living and interacting in a particular place at the same time.

Habitat

A place where a community of organisms live.

Ecological Niche

It deacribes how an organism fits into the environment. It refers to where an organism lives and what it does there. No two species occupy the same niche.

Abundance

The number of individuals of a species in a given space.

Quadrats

Size - the larger the species, the bigger the quadrat has to be. If a species occurs in an area in groups, large samples of small quadrats should be used.

Number of sample - the bigger the number, the more reliable the results.

Position of quadrat - random sampling must be used.

Systematic Sampling

Use a line transect, where any animal that crosses the belt is recorded.

Measuring abundance

Frequency - what is the likelihood of a particulat species occuring in a quadrat.

Percentage cover - an estimate of the area within a quadrat that a particular plant species covers.
