Ecosystems |
Made up of all the interacting biotic and abiotic features in a specific area. Within each ecosystem, there are numerous species. |
Populations |
A group of interbreeding organisms of one species in a habitat. |
Community |
All of the populations of different organisms living and interacting in a particular place at the same time. |
Habitat |
A place where a community of organisms live. |
Ecological Niche |
It deacribes how an organism fits into the environment. It refers to where an organism lives and what it does there. No two species occupy the same niche. |
Abundance |
The number of individuals of a species in a given space. |
Quadrats |
Size - the larger the species, the bigger the quadrat has to be. If a species occurs in an area in groups, large samples of small quadrats should be used. Number of sample - the bigger the number, the more reliable the results. Position of quadrat - random sampling must be used. |
Systematic Sampling |
Use a line transect, where any animal that crosses the belt is recorded. |
Measuring abundance |
Frequency - what is the likelihood of a particulat species occuring in a quadrat. Percentage cover - an estimate of the area within a quadrat that a particular plant species covers. |
